Led by Frye's Record Breaking Performance, Men's Track Finishes Fifth at A-Sun Championships

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Outstanding performances by redshirt junior Joe Frye (Roscommon, Mich.) in two throwing events helped him become the first Most Outstanding Field Athlete in program history to lead the Belmont men's track and field team to a fifth place finish at the 2010 Atlantic Sun Championships this weekend.
Frye shared Most Valuable Performer honors with Kennesaw State's Joshua McNair after shattering the Atlantic Sun meet record in the hammer throw with a mark of 57.41m. He also won the discus, picking up his second gold of the Championships with a toss of 47.69m.
Redshirt junior Matt Fiedler (LaGrange, Ill.) finished second in the decathlon earning a silver after amassing 6,173 points over the two days.
Other top-five performers included freshman Kyle Sullinger (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio), who took fifth in the 10,000m with a time of 32:12.01 and senior Hillary Cheruiyot (Eldoret, Kenya), who finished fifth in the 1500m with a time of 3:56.20.
In the sprints, sophomore Sam Parr (St. Louis, Mo.) took ninth in both the 200m (22.75) and 400m (49.82). In the 800m event, three Bruins came away with top-15 finishes -- senior Clay Hannah (Lebanon, Tenn.), Cheruiyot and freshman Josh Helton (Franklin, Tenn.) placed 10th (1:56.57), 12th (1:57.18) and 15th (1:59.38), respectively. The 1500m race saw Helton and Hannah claim eighth (4:00.35) and ninth places (4:00.57) to round out the Bruin presence in the event.
The distance events saw the Bruins grab four more top-11 finishes. In the 5000m, seniors Kip Hill (Liberty, Mo.) and Jordan Anderson (Mason City, Iowa) took 10th (15:38.41) and 11th (15:39.41), respectively. Anderson also finished eighth in the 10,000m with a time of 32:28.68 and was the top Belmont finisher in the 3000m steeplechase, claiming eighth with a time of 10:05.18. Senior Will Peters (Carmel, Ind.) was ninth in the same event (10:23.73).
In addition to Frye's stellar performances in the field events, junior Pierce Greenberg (Raleigh, N.C.) finished 10th in the shot put (12.10m) and 11th in thee hammer throw (36.66m).
