Women’s Basketball Hits the Road for Pre-Thanksgiving Battle

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont women's basketball team (0-4) hit the road before the Thanksgiving holiday for a contest at a first time opponent this week.  The Bruins face off against Ohio (1-1) on Wednesday night in Athens, Ohio.

 

Ohio stands at 1-1 heading into this week's matchup with Belmont, after winning their home opener 68-56 over Marshall.  The Bobcats have two players averaging in double digits- Tenishia Benson leads the team with 14.5 points per contest, followed by Erin Bailes who adds 10 points per outing.  Benson and Porsha Harris lead the team in rebounds, grabbing 10.5 boards per contest.

 

The Bruins will travel to take on the Bobcats Wednesday night for the first meeting between the programs. 

 

BU remains on the hunt for its first win of the 2011-12 campaign after nearly toppling visiting Indiana last week.  The Bruins rallied from 15 points down but were unable to overtake the Hoosiers, falling 63-52.  Senior Haley Nelson (Scottsboro, Ala.) recorded her third double-double of the season with a game-high 18 points and 10 rebounds.  Senior Cacy Burtnett (Cleveland, Tenn.) and sophomore Julianne Downs (Franklin, Tenn.) contributed eight points apiece in the effort.   Burtnett and freshmen Adrienne Tarrence (Bowling Green, Ky.) and Amara Mayers (Harvest, Ala.) each collected six boards.  Tarrence also finished with a game-high four assists while Nelson added a game-high three blocks and three steals.

 

Belmont is led in scoring and rebounding by Nelson, who is averaging 15.8 points and 9.3 boards per contest.  She also stands third in both categories in the Atlantic Sun.  Tarrence leads the team and is second in the A-Sun in assists, coming away with 4.8 per contest.  Burtnett and Downs lead the team behind the three-point arc, knocking down 45.5 percent of their shots while senior Tristan Daniel (Waynesboro, Tenn.) leads the team at the charity stripe, hitting 71.4 percent of her attempts.

 
The matchup with Ohio is the first of three first-time opponent contests on the Bruins' schedule this season.  The other new opponents are Florida (11/29) and Texas State (12/21).
