Women's Golf Wins the Belmont Invitational
OLD HICKORY, Tenn. – The Belmont women's golf team captured the team championship at the Belmont Invitational held this week at Old Hickory Country Club in Old Hickory, Tennessee.
The Bruins, who led after day one, shot a team score of 312 in Tuesday's final round to win the team title with a 36-hole score of 616. It is the program's first championship since the 2007-2008 season when they won the Jacksonville Spring Invitational. Evansville finished in second place at 633, while UAB placed third with a mark of 634.
UAB's Caitlin Watts won individual medalist honors as she shot a 75 on Tuesday to finish the tournament with a 36-hole score of 149. Belmont senior Jennifer Newman tied for second place with Cathy Doyle of Evansville with a mark of 150. It was Newman's best finish as a Bruin.
In addition to Newman, Belmont had three golfers among the top-15. Junior Janet Steen and freshman Sydney Hudson tied for eighth place at 155. Both of them shot rounds of 77 on Tuesday. It was Steen's sixth top-10 finish of the season, while it was Hudson's second top-10 finish of her freshman campaign. Senior Kelly Maguigan posted her second top-15 finish of the season as she placed 11th with a score of 156. Junior Patricia Masick finished in 33rd place with a 36-hole score of 170.
Three other Bruins competed as individuals. Freshman Evin Edens finished in seventh place with a mark of 153. It was her best finish as a collegian. Junior Megan Murphy placed 26th at 165, while Morgan McQuary finished in 34th place at 172.
The women's golf team wraps up their 2011-12 season next Monday-Wednesday, April 9-11, at the Atlantic Sun Championship in New Smyrna Beach, Florida.
