Four Women's Golfers Named to the NGCA All-American Scholar-Athlete Team

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. – Four Belmont women's golfers have been named to the 2011-12 National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) All-American Scholar-Athlete Team as announced on Friday.  This marks the seventh straight season that Belmont has had a women's golfer named to this prestigious team.  The four honorees from Belmont are: Kelly Maguigan, Jennifer Newman, Megan Murphy, and Janet Steen.

Graduated senior Kelly Maguigan, a Franklin, Tennessee native, was honored for the fourth time in her career.  She ranked third on the team in scoring average at 79.9 and posted three top-20 finishes this past season, including an 11th place finish at the Belmont Invitational.  For her career, she finished third in school history in scoring average (79.9) and fourth in top-20 finishes with nine.   In addition, Kelly was named to the Atlantic Sun Women's Golf All-Academic Team.  She is currently in Belmont's College of Pharmacy.

Graduated senior Jennifer Newman was also honored for the fourth time in her career.  During the 2011-12 season, she played 22 rounds in 10 events and carded a scoring average of 81.9.  Her best finish of the season was a tie for second at the Belmont Invitational in April.  Jennifer graduated last May from Belmont with a degree in Music Business.

Ooltewah, Tennessee native Megan Murphy was named to the team for the second consecutive year.  The rising senior majoring in Public Relations, played 17 rounds in eight events last season and finished with a scoring average of 82.8.

Rising senior Janet Steen was named to the team for the third time.  She played 22 rounds in 10 events and led the team in scoring average at 77.4, the fourth lowest in school history.  The Biology major from Hendersonville, Tennessee posted five top-10 finishes, including six place finishes at the Austin Peay, UAB, and Ann Rhoads events.  In addition, Janet was named to the Atlantic Sun Women's Golf All-Academic Team.

The criteria for selection to the All-American Scholar Team are some of the most stringent of all college athletics. The minimum cumulative GPA is 3.50 and student-athletes must have competed in at least 50% (Division I) or 66% (Division II & III) of the college's regularly scheduled competitive rounds during the year.

Belmont was one of six Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) schools to have student-athletes selected to the team.
