Women's Soccer Edged in Preseason Game at Samford

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Belmont women's soccer team was unable to find an equalizer after an early goal by Samford, falling on the road in preseason action, 1-0, on Thursday night.

The Bulldogs found the back of the net in 16th minute, sending the ball over the reach of freshman netminder Nicole Berner (Randolph, N.J.). Belmont had several chances to score in the second half but was unable to find the back of the net.

"Samford is a good team for us to play early in the season," said Head Coach Lisa Howe. "They kept us under a lot of pressure. "

"I think we improved throughout the game. We were able to narrow the shot margin and we had three scoring chances in the second half. We used our depth, used lots of numbers off the bench. It helped us to adapt and stay in the game. Tonight was a good learning experience for us and will help us get ready for a tough schedule."

Recording one shot apiece for the Bruins were juniors Jamie Loftis (Hermitage, Tenn.), Morgan McBride (Collierville, Tenn.), Patience Whitten (Germantown, Tenn.), and Danielle Stolt (Morris Plains, N.J.) and senior Madison Porter (Marietta, Ga.).

Berner and junior Sari Lin (Carefree, Ariz.) split equal time inside the net, with Lin coming away with the Bruins' lone save of the contest.

Samford held the advantage in shots, 12-7, corner kicks, 4-0, and saves, 3-1.

Belmont returns to action on Sunday evening in its final preseason game. The Bruins take on intracity rival Vanderbilt beginning at 6 p.m.
