Softball Hosts UT-Martin in Midweek Doubleheader
NASHVILLE, Tenn.--- Fresh off the first 2-2 conference weekend of the season, Belmont is set to host UT-Martin in a midweek doubleheader at Rose Park on Tuesday. The Bruins upset first place Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday to move to 10-31 on the season and 3-11 in conference play.
Belmont will take a break from conference action against the Skyhawks as they face UTM for the 22nd time in series history. The Bruins are 6-15 overall against the Skyhawks and will look to snap six game losing skid against UTM. The last win for Belmont in the series came back in 2001 and the Bruins dropped both games in Martin last season.
The Bruins are led by junior Ashley Byers, who is coming off a seven-hit, seven RBI performance last weekend that helped her earn her first career Atlantic Sun Player of the Week honors. The award was the first for Belmont since 2008 and only the fifth all-time for the school. Byers recorded two home runs to add to her team-leading total. She now has nine home runs this season and is one away from tying her own record for home runs in a single season in the Division I era, which she set with 10 last season. Her 19 career home runs also make her Belmont's career leader in home runs in any era.
The doubleheader against UT-Martin marks the first of three doubleheaders (six games) in the next four days for Belmont. The Bruins will welcome conference opponents Mercer and Kennesaw State to Rose Park on Thursday and Friday this week as they close out the home portion of their conference schedule. Thursday's games are scheduled to begin at 4 p.m., while Friday's games have been moved up to 1 p.m. and will begin following Senior Day ceremonies to be held at approximately 12:45 p.m.
