Softball Comes Up Short Against No. 7 Baylor
WACO, Texas -- Belmont (0-4) put a season-high five runs on the board against No. 7 Baylor, but ultimately fell to the Bears, 10-5, on Saturday night in the Getterman Classic hosted by Baylor.
After struggling somewhat offensively in the first day of the Getterman Classic, the Bruins posted five runs against a top-10 opponent on five hits from five different players, including contributions from three freshmen.
The teams were scoreless through the first inning, but enjoyed great offensive output in the second inning. Baylor scored seven runs in the top of the inning and Belmont responded with five runs in the bottom half of the inning. The Bears would add three more runs in the top of the third inning to reach the final margin.
The Bruins second inning began with junior Becca Gift reaching safely on a fielding error. Sophomore Kayla Brown entered the game as a pinch runner and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Ashley Hammer. Freshman Kat Hollingsworth singled to move the runner to third, giving the Bruins runners on first and third with only one out in the inning. Sophomore Kim Johnson singled, scoring Brown, and Belmont again had runners on first and third. Senior Amanda Buntin doubled, scoring Hollingsworth and Johnson. Buntin would eventually come around to score after another fielding error by Baylor, making the score 7-4 Bears. Freshman Heather Turner followed the error with a double, the second for the Bruins of the inning, which scored fellow freshman Kirbie Ferrell. A groundout from senior Ashley Byers ended the inning with the score of 7-5. Belmont would get no closer, as the Bruins were unable to score the rest of the game.
Belmont will close out play in the Getterman Classic with a 9 a.m. meeting with Iowa on Sunday. Links to livestats, full recaps, boxscores, and all schedule information is available at www.belmontbruins.com. Fans can also follow the team on Twitter by searching @BelmontSoftball.
