Belmont comes off a close loss on the road at UT-Martin on Tuesday. The Bruins lost 1-3 to the Skyhawks, giving up two runs late in the game. With the start of conference play, Belmont will conclude a tough pre-conference schedule that saw the Bruins match up against Arkansas and Ole Miss from the SEC, Purdue and Ohio State from the Big Ten, and nationally ranked Baylor from the Big 12. Belmont also faced tough competition from Chattanooga, Wichita State, Murray State, Marshall and others. The Bruins lost five games to rain in the non-conference schedule.
Against Jacksonville all-time, the Bruins are 7-9, with a stalemate being broken last season when the Dolphins swept Belmont in Rose Park. Belmont hasn't faired as well against North Florida, holding a 3-9 all-time record against the Ospreys. However, last season the Bruins picked up a critical win against UNF in the inaugural game at Rose Park, winning 1-0. Belmont lost the second game of the doubleheader, 3-2 in extra innings. The Bruins start A-Sun play looking to make the tournament for the first time in school history as Belmont makes one final run through the conference before joining the Ohio Valley Conference next season.
Belmont is led by senior Ashley Byers, who leads the team in batting average (.344), hits (21), RBIs (12) and home runs (4). She is the all-time career leader in home runs at Belmont with 23. Also turning in a strong performance for the Bruins is freshman Kat Hollingsworth, who has exploded offensively in recent weeks. Currently, Hollingsworth ranks second on the team in RBIs (10) and is tied for second in hits (14) with fellow freshman Heather Turner. The Bruins will look for the freshman to continue to make an impact in their first season of Atlantic Sun play.
