Softball Hosts Stetson and FGCU to Open Home Conference Schedule
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Belmont (6-24, 1-3 A-Sun) will kick off a nine game home stand when the Bruins host Stetson and Florida Gulf Coast for doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday. Belmont will open the home portion of the conference schedule against Stetson on Friday, beginning at 12 p.m. The Bruins will then host FGCU on Saturday for Youth Day, beginning at 4 p.m.
Belmont split the series with both teams in Florida last season, defeating Stetson 10-5 in the second game of the doubleheader and topping Florida Gulf Coast 7-4 in the final game of the series. The Bruins are 2-18 all time against Stetson and 1-7 all time against FGCU. Belmont opened Atlantic Sun play last weekend on the road at Jacksonville and North Florida. The Bruins split with Jacksonville, but dropped both games to North Florida to go 1-3 in the opening weekend. Belmont will look to improve that mark with the home stand in a conference race that is very wide open in 2012, with no teams going undefeated in the opening weekend of play. Mercer sits atop the conference at 3-1, while Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson are both 2-2 in conference play, putting them tied with a host of teams for fourth in the conference.
The Bruins are led by senior Ashley Byers, who so far is having a solid senior season, leading the team in batting average (.338), hits (24), RBIs (15), and home runs (4). Byers also ranks in the top 10 in the conference in on base percentage (.460) and walks (16). Also having a strong showing for Belmont in 2012 is freshman Heather Turner. Turner has three home runs on the season, leads the team in runs (10), and has turned in 11 RBIs this season. She is also second on the team to fellow freshman Kat Hollingsworth in doubles with three.
For Saturday's games against Florida Gulf Coast, Belmont will be holding its first ever Youth Day. The first 25 kids to the game will receive an autographed poster and will have the opportunity to take the field with the team. Youth in attendance will also receive a discounted rate for this summer's Belmont Softball Youth Camp. Prizes are available for the best poster in the stands and youths are encouraged to where their team jerseys and uniforms to the games.
