Women's Tennis Has Solid Start to the Fall Season at Memphis Invitational
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Belmont women's tennis team had a solid start to their fall season as they competed in the Memphis Invitational held last weekend at The Racquet Club in Memphis, Tennessee.
The Bruins' singles play was highlighted by two seniors: Lindsay Bennett and Abby Leatherwood. Lindsay Bennett finished fourth in the B1 Singles Flight. In the first round, she beat Ivon Simic of UT-Martin 6-4, 2-6, 6-0, but fell in the semifinals to Meredith Burns of Tulsa 6-1, 6-1. In the third place match, Bennett lost to Katie Cecil of Tulane 6-3, 6-1. Abby Leatherwood finished third in the A3 Singles consolation flight. In the first round, she lost to Kir Kemp of Georgia State 6-2, 6-3 and then fell to Aleks Dzakula of Evansville in a first round consolation match 7-5, 6-2. However, Leatherwood came back and beat Johanie Van Zyl of UT-Martin in the third place match 6-3, 6-4.
In doubles, the duo of Leatherwood and junior Laura Stack finished third in the A2 Doubles Flight. They beat Evansville's Scherwin and Sorensen in the first round 8-5, but then fell in the semifinals to Tulane's Elster and Hamlin 8-4. The duo bounced back in the third place match as they beat Van Zyl and Simic of UT-Martin 8-4. In addition, the pairing of sophomore Natalia Nunes and junior Abbey Hogan finished second in the B1 Doubles consolation bracket. They lost in the first round to Hochwalt/Margolies of Austin Peay, but then came back to defeat Keevil and Bellini of Lipscomb 8-5 in a first round consolation match. In the consolation finals, the duo lost to Farley and Davidson of Tulsa 8-0.
The Bruins will be back on the court this weekend, September 24-26, at the Austin Peay Fall Classic in Clarksville, TN.
