Women's Tennis Has Successful Weekend at Vanderbilt's June Stewart Invitational
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont women's tennis team had a successful weekend at Vanderbilt's June Stewart Invitational held this past weekend in Nashville.
Two Bruins won consolation bracket titles in their respective singles draws and one reached the consolation finals. Senior Lindsay Bennett won the consolation title of the Peterson Draw. She fell to Alex Dachos of MTSU in the quarterfinals 6-2, 6-3, but then she beat Alyssa Bellini of Lipscomb in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 in the consolation semifinals and then defeated Cassidy Cunitz of Murray State in the finals.
In the Roby Draw, sophomore Natalia Nunes lost in the quarterfinals of Taylor Vick of Murray State 6-0, 6-0, but then beat Carlina Jow of Lipscomb in straight sets in the consolation semifinals and then defeated Carla Suga of Murray State in three sets to capture the consolation title.
Meanwhile in the Balafas Draw, senior Abby Leatherwood lost her first round match to Marietta Bigus of MTSU 6-4, 6-2. She came back in the consolation semifnals and beat Kara Jackson of Lipscomb 6-2, 6-0, but in the finals, she fell to Remi Martin of Purdue in three sets 4-6, 6-3, 10-5.
In doubles, Belmont picked up one victory as the duo of Laura Stack and Abby Leatherwood beat Elizabeth Keevil and Danielle Hansen of Lipscomb 8-3 in a consolation match.
This tournament wraps up the fall season for the women's tennis team. They open their spring season on Friday, January 21st with a road match at Austin Peay.
