BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – The Belmont women's tennis team notched their first victory of the season as they defeated North Alabama 5-2 in a match played indoors Saturday night at the Wildwood Tennis Club in Brentwood, Tennessee.
The Bruins started off strong as they won two of three doubles matches to capture the doubles point. The duo of Abby Leatherwood and Fabiana Mersan won at the number one position as they beat Victoria Rees and Teresa Franco 8-4. While at number three, Catherine Holliday and Natalia Nunes defeated Bruna Vieira and Madison Patey 8-0.
In singles, Belmont continued their fine play, posting wins in four of the six matches to clinch the victory over the Lions 5-2. Sophomore Fabiana Mersan won her first singles match as a Bruin as she beat Bruna Vieira at number two 6-2, 1-6, 6-4. At number four, senior Lindsay Bennett defeated Lenka Hola 6-0, 6-2. Sophomore Natalia Nunes won at number five over Teresa Franco 6-7, 6-2, 10-7, while at number six junior Laura Stack beat Madison Patey 7-6, 6-1.
Belmont (1-4) will be back in action next Friday as they host Cumberland (Tenn.) in a 6:00pm match indoors at the Wildwood Tennis Club.
