NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Belmont Women's Tennis snapped a two game skid to open Ohio Valley Conference play with a win on Friday evening. The Bruins (3-9) edged visiting Murray State, 4-3, to notch their first league win of the season.
After a slow start in doubles action that saw the Racers take the point, Belmont jumped into action on the singles side.
BU saw wins in straight sets at Nos. 2, 4, and 5 with wins going to seniors Lindsey Whitehead (St. Louis, Mo.), Laura Van Eeckhoudt (Overijse, Belgium) and Abbie Mather (Louisville, Ky.) before the teams battled down to the wire for the final decision.
Senior Laura Kent (Kangaroo Valley, Australia) had to go to three before pulling out the 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 win at No. 1 to seal the deal.
"Today was a great start to the season," said Head Coach Mark Srouji.
Belmont returns to action on Saturday, hosting in-state rival Austin Peay. Match time is set for 12:30 p.m. at Centennial Sportsplex.
