Volleyball Drops Opener at UTSA Invitational

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - - Belmont University volleyball (1-3) dropped the opening match of the UTSA Invitational to the host Roadrunners (3-2), 25-17, 25-18, 25-15, Thursday evening.

"We did a great job tonight on first ball contact, but were not good after that," said head coach Deane Webb.

In the opening set, a kill from sophomore Scarlet Gable (Munford, Tenn.) put the Bruins on the board first and UTSA and Belmont exchanged points. The set saw seven ties before the Roadrunners extended their lead to take set one, 25-17.

Sophomore Kelsi Dean (Marietta, Ga.) paced Belmont with four kills in the second set. The Bruins put together shor runs, but UTSA's 9-0 run helped the Roadrunners take a 2-0 lead into the break.

The third set started close, but UTSA was able to put together long runs to extend their lead en route to taking the victory in the third set.

As a team, the Bruins recorded five aces in three sets, with two of them coming from freshman Jocelyn Youngdahl (Stillwater, Minn.).

"Jocelyn connected well behind the setter, and showed signs of many good things to come," said Webb.

Dean led Belmont with six kills, while junior Danielle Prochaska (Middleton, Wisc.) and Gable added five. Junior setter Hannah Miranda (Covington, La.) dished out 23 assists.

"Danielle looks more comfortable every time she is out there," said Webb.

Gable paced the Bruin defense with nine digs, while junior libero Jamie Lundstrom (La Grange, Ill.) and freshman Marissa Hine (Noblesville, Ind.) recorded seven each.

"Scarlet made a number of great plays on defense, and is improving offensively," said Webb.

Belmont takes the court again tomorrow to face UTEP at noon.
