Volleyball Takes Down Murray State in Four Sets Saturday

MURRAY, Ky. – Belmont volleyball (16-12, 9-3) defeated Murray State on Saturday afternoon in four sets. With the win, the Bruins have won eight straight games.

"It is always great to get two road wins in conference play, and this weekend provided that opportunity," said head coach Deane Webb. "There were stretches of good overall play this weekend, and we defended very well in five of the seven sets we played. Our Jamie, Jen, and Scarlet passed well throughout the weekend, and it allowed our middles to have exceptional numbers attacking."

Behind an early lead, Murray State won the opening set, 25-21. The Racers went on a 4-0 run to take a 14-9 lead until a kill from senior Jen Myer (New Braunfels, Tex.) silenced their run. Belmont came within two, 18-16, but Murray State continued to extend their lead. The Bruins kept the set alive behind back-to-back kills after the Racers had the set point, but a service error ended the set in favor of the Racers.

Belmont bounced back and took control of set two. Sparked by a kill from junior Alex Martin (Ooltewah, Tenn.), the Bruins took a six-point lead, 9-3. Murray State responded and went on a short run, but the Bruins continued to maintain the lead throughout as Belmont won set two, 25-20, tying the match at 1-1 at the break.

After the break, Belmont took a 6-2 lead before the set was tied at 8-8. A kill from freshman Jessica Vestal (Concord, Calif.) sparked a run for the Bruins to put them ahead 13-9. A 3-1 Belmont run ended the set, 25-16.

Set four remained close as both teams exchanged points. A Racer attack error sparked a run for the Bruins as they scored six unanswered points to put them ahead 20-13. Another run, this time started by Martin, gave Belmont the match point, but back-to-back kills from the Racers kept the set alive. A kill from Vestal finished the set, 25-18.

Myer registered a double-double with a team-high 17 kills and 18 digs. Martin added 15 kills and had a .609 hitting percentage. Senior setter Hannah Miranda (Covington, La.) had 54 assists while senior libero Jamie Lundstrom (La Grange, Ill.) recorded a team-high 22 digs.

Belmont will return to action Friday, November 8 at Eastern Kentucky. That match is scheduled for 6:00pm.

"Next weekend will be a big test for us," said coach Webb. "EKU is very hot right now, and Morehead is having another great season. We will need to play very well in both matches."
