NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Belmont Baseball gets back into conference play, heading on the road this weekend for the first time in 14 games. The Bruins will play a three game Atlantic Sun Conference series against North Florida in Jacksonville starting today at 6:00 p.m.
North Florida welcomes Belmont to Harmon Stadium with a current record of 11-11. The Ospreys are 3-6 in Atlantic Sun Conference play, going 1-2 against FGCU, 2-1 versus USC Upstate, and getting swept by ETSU. Most recently, UNF split a pair of games at home against Florida International. Alex Hernandez leads the team at the plate with a .392 batting average, four doubles and 16 runs batted in. Kyle Westwood, who will face off with Belmont freshman James Buckelew (Suwanee, Ga.) on Saturday, has been getting it done on the mound. He has a record of 1-1 with a 2.70 ERA, 29 strikeouts and only four walks in 30.0 innings pitched.
Belmont leads North Florida in the all-time series by a mark of 8-6. In the first ever meeting between the two teams back in 2006, the Bruins fell at the hands of the Ospreys by a score of 6-3. Last season, Belmont topped UNF in both of their contests, taking the first tilt 4-1 and the second by a score of 15-9. North Florida holds a 4-2 advantage in the confines of Harmon Stadium.
The Bruins, now 12-10 on the season after winning their fifth straight game on Wednesday, will be throwing their usual rotation this weekend. Sophomore Chase Brookshire (Chattanooga, Tenn.), who owns a 3.86 ERA, will start tonight, while Buckelew and senior Nate Woods (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) are set to go on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
