NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Three Belmont Bruins were named to the College Sports Madness All-Atlantic Sun Conference Team on Monday. Junior Chase Brookshire (Chattanooga, Tenn.) earned first team honors, while senior captain Zac Mitchell (Cordova, Tenn.) and sophomore James Buckelew (Lawrenceville, Ga.) garnered second team accolades.
The online publication honored 24 players in the Atlantic Sun Conference, while naming the top field player, the top pitcher, the top freshman, and the coach of the year in the league. Belmont, USC Upstate, Kennesaw State, and Mercer each placed three players on the two teams, while North Florida led the way with five honorees.
Brookshire leads Belmont starters and was third in the A-Sun with a 2.22 ERA. He was also third in the league with a .217 opponent batting average. He has a team-leading seven wins, one complete game, and three combined shutouts. He has struck out a team-best 69 batters, 25 of which were looking, and walked only 20.
Mitchell is the in the top ten in the A-Sun in eight offensive categories, and leads the league in on base percentage (.492), runs scored (58), and time hit by a pitch (28). He has been among the toughest to strike out in the nation, recording only nine in 194 at bats. The senior broke a Belmont record in hit by pitches this season, and his 58 runs scored are tied for fourth most in a single season for a Bruins.
Buckelew is close behind Brookshire with a 2.24 ERA, which is fourth in the conference. Opponents are only hitting .246 against the sophomore, and A-Sun batters decrease to a .236 average. The left-hander is a near perfect 6-1, and Belmont is 10-3 in games he has started. Buckelew has one combined shutout and 27 strikeouts on the season.
