NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont University baseball program welcomed over 20 former players for an activity packed weekend to bring together past and present athletes to celebrate the program.
Friday, former players joined current athletes and the coaching staff for the annual Dave Whitten Memorial Golf Tournament. The tournament was held at the Forrest Crossing Golf Course in Franklin, Tenn.
Ryan Brenning, Dr. Jeff Hollis, Nick Church, and Doug Hudson took home the victory shooting 18 under par. Pitching coach Matt Barnett, Chris Manning, Roy Manning, and Jimmy Stanley finished right behind at 16 under par. The tournament was renamed in Coach Dave Whitten's name after his passing in 2012.
The next day kicked off with an unofficial home run derby before the alumni took on the 2018 Bruins' squad. The youth of the current team defeated the alumni 7-3. Senior Austin Reynolds (Smyrna, Tenn.) smashed a home run in the victory. Junior Casey Queener (Brentwood, Tenn.) pitched the first two scoreless innings of the game while only giving up one hit.
Baseball's Alumni Weekend falls on the first weekend of October annually. The tradition began with former coach Dave Whitten in the 60's and has been running strong for approximately 46 years.
