NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Belmont Baseball heads back to the field for a mid-week tune-up on Tuesday, March 6th. The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers will visit E.S. Rose Park for the second meeting of the programs this season. First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m.
Last weekend, the Bruins hosted Bradley for a three-game series. Belmont was swept last weekend, falling to the Braves in each contest. The Bruins will look to bounce back from a five-game losing skid as they try to top WKU.
Senior Matt Cogen (Franklin, Tenn.) promises to be a factor in the matchup. Cogen leads Belmont in seven statistical categories. His currently boasts a .391 batting average with three doubles and a single and home run. Cogen leads the squad in runs (13) and RBIs. Cogen has five multi-hit games and has recorded a hit in all but two of Belmont's games this season.
Scouting the Hilltoppers
Head Coach John Pawlowski is in his 3rd year at the helm of the Hilltoppers baseball program. With a 16-year head coaching background, Coach Pawlowski has made 11 NCAA Tournament trips and secured over 545 wins. The Hilltoppers have an overall record of 5-7 on the season with a combined batting average of .251. Sam McElreath leads the squad with an average of .360 on 25 at-bats. Jacob Rhinesmith is off to a good start this season with a team-high slugging percentage of .625. Rhinesmith leads the team with 17 hits and eight runs. The Hilltoppers have a deep bullpen that boasts a combined 4.05 ERA. 15 different Hilltoppers have seen time on the mound this season, striking out 94 while walking 53.
Belmont holds a narrow lead over the Hilltoppers in the all-time series record with a 24-23 advantage. Belmont played a pair of midweek games against Western Kentucky last season, splitting the series 1-1. Earlier this season, the Bruins travelled to Bowling Green for their first road contest of the season. Belmont scored the first run of the game, but ultimately fell 4-1.
