NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont Baseball Team will be back in action on Tuesday, March 20 as they take on No. 8 Vanderbilt at First Tennessee Park. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. CT.
Belmont is looking to bounce back after suffering a three-game losing skid. The Bruins were swept at Morehead State this past weekend. The Bruins are now 7-12 overall and sit even 3-3 in Ohio Valley Conference Play.
Sophomore Matt Cogen (Franklin, Tenn.) is having a great second season as a Belmont Bruin. He currently leads the team with a .380 batting average and .557 slugging percentage. Cogen has rocketed six doubles, a triple, and two home-runs on 30 hits. He has also driving in 16 RBIs.
Junior Chas Hadden (Morristown, Tenn.) is currently a perfect 9-9 on stolen base attempts. He not only leads the team, but also the conference in stolen bases. The Belmont squad has stolen a conference best 25 bags this season.
The Bruins have hit 50 doubles on the season, the second most in the Ohio Valley Conference. Belmont not only sits atop the conference, but the nation. Belmont is currently hitting the 10th most doubles per game in the nation (2.63)
Belmont sits in the top-three of the conference in seven statistical categories. BU leads the conference in assists (177), stolen bases (25), and saves (5). BU is second in the conference in slugging percentage (.439), doubles (47), and total bases (229). Belmont is third in total hits (147).
Scouting the Commodores
Head Coach Tim Corbin is at the helm of the Vanderbilt Commodores baseball team. The Commodores are 15-5 overall and remain a perfect 3-0 in SEC play. Last weekend, the Commodores bounced back from a mid-week loss and swept Mississippi State in a three-game series, scoring 19 runs on the weekend. Austin Martin leads the Vanderbilt offense with a .426 batting average having recorded 26 hits on 35 at-bats. Vanderbilt boasts a 2.67 team ERA seeing good production from a deep pitching staff.
Vanderbilt holds a commanding 7-26 all-time lead over the Bruins. Last season, Belmont and Vanderbilt met in a mid-week tuneup at First Tennessee Park. The Commodores came away with the 17-11 victory.
