NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Belmont Baseball returns to conference action this weekend as they travel to Murray, Ky. for a three-game series against the Murray State Racers. First pitch is slated for Friday, April 27that 6:00 p.m. CT.
About the Bruins
Belmont is coming off a mid-week victory over rival Lipscomb on Tuesday. The win created a series sweep of the Bisons this season. Belmont is currently hitting .269 as a team and .275 in OVC Play. The Bruins are averaging over 5.5 runs per game.
Belmont has shown some crafty base running this season. The Belmont squad is second in the OVC in stolen bases with 58. Junior Chas Hadden (Morristown, Tenn.) is a big reason the Bruins have stolen so many bags. Hadden is a perfect 17-17 on stolen bases, the second most in the conference.10 Bruins have stolen at least one base this season and have only been caught eight times.
Walk It Out
Hadden continues to be a problem for opponents at the plate. Hadden has drawn 42 base on balls already this season, the third most in the country. He is averaging 1.05 walks per game which is fifth in the country. Hadden continues to work his way up the record book in total career walks. He currently has 137 which puts him second in the all-time list and just 8 from the lead.
Junior Casey Queener has been consistent on the mound this season. After an impressive outing at home against Austin Peay two weeks ago, Queener had another impressive outing against EIU when he threw eight innings, struck out 10, and walked only one. He leads the team in strikeouts (74). He has the third-best earned run average (3.09) in the OVC and leads the conference in strikeouts and is second in batters struck out looking (21).
Head Coach Dave Jarvis is familiar with the Racers. Jarvis served as an assistant coach at Murray State for four years from 1994-1998.
About the Racers
David Sims leads Murray in batting average (.360), hits (58), total bases (95), doubles (23) and RBI (41). He is one of four Racers batting over .300. Gavin Wehby is one of the craftier base runners on the squad, leading the team in stolen bases (14) while only being caught twice. The Racers are batting .269 as a team and have recorded 360 hits this season.
Braydon Cook leads the pitching staff with a 5.26 ERA with 13 appearances, 12 of which have been in relief. Trevor McMurray has pitched a team-high 48 innings. The pitching staff has a combined ERA of 7.24 over 341.2 innings and have allowed 319 runs on 424 hits.
Belmont leads the all-time series 18-14. Last season, the Racers came to Nashville and won two of three games at E.S. Rose Park. The squads met again in the OVC tournament where Belmont defeated the Racers 5-4 to advance.
