NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Belmont University baseball coach Dave Jarvis announced the promotion of Aaron Smith to associate head coach on Thursday.
Smith, elevated from his role as assistant coach, will enter his 10thseason on the Belmont baseball coaching staff.
In his time at Belmont, Smith has coached 23 First and Second Team All-Conference position players, nine players that were elected to the All-Freshmen team, and two Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament MVPs. In all, 21 former Belmont players have gone on to play professional baseball since the 2009 season. He has been instrumental in the coordination of the base running scheme that has been a staple of the Bruin program.
Most recently, Smith coached Belmont standout Matt Cogen who was selected in the 2018 MLB Draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
In 2016, Smith helped Belmont to conclude the season ranking in the top-10 in five offensive categories. Under his guidance, many players boasted impressive seasons including current Bruins Chas Hadden and Hunter Holland who earned spots on the OVC All-Newcomer roster. Hadden was also named to the Freshman All-America list for his outstanding play.
He was vital in developing former Bruins Matt Beaty and Drew Ferguson who were selected in the 12thround by the Los Angeles Dodgers and in the 19thround by the Houston Astros respectively in the 2015 MLB draft. Both were selected to the ABCA/Rawlings All-Region team.
Smith was an integral part in the 2013 squad who set a Belmont school record with 37 regular season wins in their debut season as a member of the Ohio Valley Conference. He also helped guide one of the best statistical offenses in all of NCAA Division I baseball in 2015. The Bruins were in the NCAA Top 10 in four categories: runs scored, doubles, slugging percentage, and home runs.
Smith will continue to support the baseball program in a number of capacities, including recruiting, coaching third base, player development, and other day-to-day activities.
