NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Belmont University Baseball continues Ohio Valley Conference play this weekend, facing its first true road test as it travels to UT Martin. First pitch of the series is slated for 4:00 p.m. CT.
Belmont leads the all-time series with the Skyhawks 40-24. The series dates all the way back to 1957. Last season, Belmont swept UT Martin in Nashville for its first OVC wins of the season. In the final game of last year's three-game series, it took extra innings to determine the winner with Belmont coming away with the 9-8 victory in 12 innings.
For the third week in a row, the Bruins had an OVC Pitcher or Player of the week honoree. Freshman Joshua South (Cookeville, Tenn.) Was most recently named the OVC Pitcher of the Week after a complete game shutout of Morehead State. In week three, sophomore Jackson Campbell (Russelville, Ky.) was named Player of the Week and senior Casey Queener (Brentwood, Tenn.) was named week two's Pitcher of the Week.
Joshua South has been impressive in his appearances on the bump this season. Last week, South threw a complete game shutout of preseason favorite Morehead State. He only allowed multiple hits in one inning and no Eagle ever advanced past second base. Even more impressively, he threw nine complete innings without a walk.
Senior Casey Queener has been a powerful force on the mound and the leader of the Belmont pitching staff. He leads the OVC with 39 strikeouts, 15 of those looking. Opponents are hitting just .211 off Queener.
GARDNER HEATS UP
Senior Devon Gardner (Maryville, Tenn.) has heated up at the plate in recent games. After a slow start to the season, Gardner has notched seven of his eleven hits in the last five games. He went 3-for-3 in game two of the series with Morehead State.
Belmont started strong in Ohio Valley Conference play, winning its opening series. The Bruins defeated preseason conference favorite in two of three games last weekend, holding the strong offensive team to just nine runs on the weekend.
The Bruins face its first true road test this weekend. Belmont has only played away from its home diamond once this season for a midweek game at MTSU. Belmont won that game 5-4.
