RICHMOND, Ky. – Belmont struggled offensively Friday night, dropping a 3-2 decision to Eastern Kentucky.
The Colonels came out swinging and took an early lead after the first complete inning. After the Bruins were retired in order in the top of the inning, EKU blasted a solo shot to lead off the bottom of the first. Another home run, this time a two-run long ball, gave EKU an early 3-0 lead.
Belmont responded in the top of the second. Senior Hunter Holland (Soddy Daisy, Tenn.) got things going in the inning with a leadoff double to left center field. With two outs, freshman Grayson Taylor (Cullman, Ala.) swung on an 0-2 pitch and hammered a home run over the left field fence to cut the EKU lead 3-2. Consecutive walks continued the Belmont threat, but a runner caught stealing ended the inning.
The final seven innings of the game saw impressive defensive play from both teams. Neither team was able to crack the scoreboard for the remainder of the game.
Belmont's night was highlighted by senior Kyle Klotz (Fairview, Tenn.) making his 115th career appearance on the mound in a Belmont uniform. His appearance on Friday broke the OVC all-time career record previously held by Cable Wright of Morehead State.
Sophomore catcher Jackson Campbell (Russellville, Ky.) has been stellar behind the plate this series. He has thrown out four runners stealing on a team that has stolen the seventh most bases in the country.
The series will be decided in the series finale matchup. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m. CT at Earle Combs Stadium.
