NASHVILLE, Tenn. - - Nashville Mayor David Briley issued an official proclamation declaring Friday, April 5 Rick Byrd Day in Nashville.
To celebrate this special day, Belmont is encouraging fans, friends and admirers of Coach Byrd from around the country to wear a sweater vest Friday in honor of his iconic sideline uniform; the university also is encouraging fans to post well-wishes and selfies to social media using the hashtag #rickbyrdday.
Byrd, who officially announced his retirement Monday following a hall of fame coaching career, won 805 games and led Belmont to national prominence in NCAA Division I and NAIA. Beyond the on-court success, Belmont enjoyed unparalleled success academically, leading the nation with 17 Academic All-America selections since 2001 and 18 consecutive years of a team grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.
Moreover, his example of integrity, humility, service, loyalty and excellence embodied the Belmont University ideal.
