NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont men's golf team opens up its 2011 fall season this weekend at the UK Bluegrass Fall Invitational at the University Club in Lexington, Kentucky.
As they enter the 2011-12 season, the Bruins enter with a new look. Five newcomers (four freshmen and one transfer) join returning letterwinners Elliott Wickenden and Ben Simpson on this year's squad. This group looks to improve on last season's successes and build for the future.
As the season begins, the team's two returning golfers are expected to bring some much needed experience to a young team. Sophomore Ben Simpson finished third on the team last season with a 76.1 average and posted three top-30 finishes. Junior Elliott Wickenden had two top-15 finishes last season, including a tie for fourth at the Samford Invitational in March. He also finished in a tie for eighth at the Tennessee State Amateur last month.
This week's tournament is one of five events Belmont will compete in during the fall campaign. All five tournaments will be held in either in Kentucky or Tennessee. After their trip to Kentucky's tournament, the team will be competing in events hosted by Vanderbilt, Murray State, Cincinnati, and Austin Peay.
The UK Bluegrass Fall Invitational will be a 54-hole event held on at the University Club of Kentucky in Lexington. The first and second rounds will be played on Saturday, with the third and final round held on Sunday. For more information on the event, go to www.ukathletics.com.
