NASHVILLE, Tenn.- The Belmont University men's soccer team opens its 2015 campaign, Friday, Aug. 28 when it hosts crosstown foe Lipscomb, for the Battle of the Boulevard. Match time on the pitch is set for 7 p.m. CT at E.S. Rose Park.
In its lone exhibition matchup of the preseason, Belmont fell on the road to Mercer, 2-1. After trailing at the half 2-0, the Bruins turned in a strong effort in the second stanza, narrowing the deficit to just one goal and coming to close to notching an equalizer. Redshirt sophomore Elliot Jones scored for Belmont off an assist from Raphael Colmanette in the 70th minute. BU looks to carry its momentum gained in the second half against Mercer into Friday's showdown with Lipscomb.
Lipscomb went 0-2-1 in its exhibition portion of games, dropping decisions at Louisville, Kentucky and playing to a draw against Memphis. Last season the Bisons compiled a 12-4-1 record, claiming the program's first ever Atlantic Sun regular season title before falling in the conference semifinals. The Bisons return 2014 Atlantic Sun Freshman of the Year Ivan Alvarado and F/MF Matt Kerridge from last year's conference championship squad.
Friday's tilt between the Belmont Bruins and the Lipscomb Bisons marks the 17th meeting all time between the two programs. The Bruins hold the all-time series edge by a narrow margin of 8-7-2. In the last regular season meeting in 2013, Lipscomb came out on top 3-1, while last year Belmont and Lipscomb met in an exhibition affair.
