NASHVILLE, Tenn.- The Belmont University men's soccer team (1-6-1) suffered a setback Sunday afternoon, dropping a 4-1 decision to the Georgia Southern Eagles, wrapping up competition at the Lipscomb Invitational.
Sophomore striker Rashad Hyacenth (D'Abadie, Trinidad and Tobago) scored his team-high third goal of the season in the 84th minute of the match. Hyacenth's score narrowed the deficit to 2-1. Matt Lopoyda (Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada) played an excellent cornerkick into the box where he found Hyacenth.
GSU answered the Belmont score with its third goal of the match minutes later. After Grayson Rector (Peachtree City, Ga.) made a great save but the ball caromed perfectly to Georgia Southern's Christian Duncan who shot it past Balani who was in the goal as the last line of defense. The Eagles scored again in the 88th Emmanuel Raji beat Rector with a low, bouncing shot.
The final 4-1 tally was a tad misleading as Belmont hung in for the majority of the match and only trailed by one goal with three minutes remaining in the regulation. The Bruins registered 11 shots to Georgia Southern's 14, and compiled four shots on goal compared to the Eagles' nine.
The Bruins racked up three corners in first four minutes playing with a sense of urgency early on in the frame. In the second minute, Rashad Hyacenth (D'Abadie, Trinidad and Tobago) won a challenge and attempted a bicycle type kick but his shot just missed as it ricocheted off the crossbar.
In the 11th minute, Georgia Southern's Nick Wells opened the scoring, finding the lower right corner of the net to put the Eagles on the board. Wells was fed by teammate Jeremy Rector with a very nice pass on the right side of the pitch.
Wells added his second score of the match in the 22nd minute, as he fended off several defensive challenges by Belmont, winning possession and blasting it past Rector.
The Bruins trailed 2-0 but the first half did feature quite a few scoring chances for BU. Lopoyda struck the ball very well in the 26th, but his shot sailed high of the goal. Soon after, Lopoyda had an opportunity on a run out play but Georgia Southern's keeper left his perch and made a sliding save to shut the attempt down.
In the 55th minute, Rector stopped a GSU chance when on the right side of the pitch very close shot by Christian Duncan. Duncan again made his way through Belmont's defensive third and challenged Rector, but the junior keeper made another strong save by coming up and notching the save. Rector again registered a quality save in the 71st. Rector finished with five saves on the afternoon.
Adriano Balani (Durres, Albania) managed a quality shot but it hit the side of the net 69th minute.
In the 83rd and 84th minutes Belmont was on the offensive. In the 83rd, Colmanette hit Hyacenth in stride with a brilliant pass and Hyacenth had a point blank shot but attempt was saved. Just seconds later, the pair teamed up again with a similar type play but Hyacenth again was denied by the GSU keeper. His persistence would pay off as he broke through with a score in the proceeding moments.
The Bruins return to action Saturday, Sept. 26 when they kickoff Horizon League conference action with a home match against Oakland at 2 p.m. CT. at E.S. Rose Park.
