NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Belmont University Men's Soccer dropped a 2-0 decision to crosstown rivals Lipscomb on Friday night under the lights at Lipscomb Soccer Stadium.
The game was aggressive from both sides from the start with the first caution being shown to Belmont in the 19'. It took some time for both sides to settle in, but senior Matt Vuylsteke (Hamilton, Ont., Canada) put the first shot on target for either squad in the 30' but the Lipscomb keeper came up with the save to keep things 0-0.
Lipscomb had several dangerous looks in the next few minutes, but the Belmont defense held strong and was able to sustain the onslaught of Bisons shots. Lipscomb finally opened up the scoring in the waning minutes of the first half after a strike from nearly 20 yards out found the back of the net in the 41'.
Lipscomb came out of the halftime break on the attack and peppered several shots towards the Belmont goal. In the 49', senior Alex Seeley (Longmont, Colo.) made his first of two saves in the 49' to keep Lipscomb from striking again.
The Bisons scored what would prove to be the final goal of the game in the 57'. The goal came after a Bemont foul set up a Lipscomb free kick from the top of the box 20 yards out. Ryan Birchfield took the free kick and placed it in the top right corner to give Lipscomb some insurance.
Sophomore Ares Marlonsson (Thornton, Colo.) got something going for the Bruins in the 63' streaking through the Lipscomb defense to put a shot on goal that was saved by the Bisons.
Belmont was on the attack for much of the final minutes of the matchup but weren't able to find the back of the net and ultimately fell 2-0.
Belmont will be back on the pitch Saturday, September 1 at Campbell for a 6:00 p.m. kick.
