Clash With the Cougars

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Belmont University men's soccer hits the road for a non-conference matchup with SIUE on Saturday. Kickoff at Korte Stadium is slated for 7:00 p.m. CST.

While the sides have met just three times, SIUE holds the series lead 2-1. The last time the two teams met was in 2011 at SIUE when the Cougars won 2-0. In fact, in each of the three matchups, the home team has been victorious.

SIUE men's soccer is 5-1-2 on the season. The Cougars have been efficient on the offensive end, averaging 1.5 goals scored per game. Junior midfielder Jorge Gonzales is at the forefront of the SIUE offensive charge with six goals on 27 shots this season. Meanwhile, on the defensive end, the Cougars have been equally as impressive. SIUE's opponents have scored just seven goals, averaging under one per game. Belmont and SIUE have played just one common opponent, Memphis. SIUE's tied the Tigers 2-2 at Memphis.

Belmont will be riding high after an exciting 3-2 victory over Eastern Illinois Tuesday night at E.S. Rose Park in Nashville, Tenn.  A Panthers' red card in the first 10 minutes gave BU the one-man advantage. EIU took advantage of its limited offensive opportunities to take a 1-0 lead and a 2-1 lead, but the Bruins quickly equalized on both occasions. With just 47 seconds left in regulation, freshman Niccolo Dagnoni (Milan, Italy) netted his first career goal to secure the 3-2 victory for the Bruins.

After defeating Eastern Illinois on Tuesday, the Bruins have won back-to-back contests for the first time this season. The Bruins' last winning streak dates back to the September of the 2017 season with consecutive wins over IUPUI and Eastern Illinois.

Freshman Ares Marlonsson (Denver, Colo.) has proven to be one of the most important pieces to the Belmont offense this season. As Belmont's leading scorer, he has scored one goal and dished out four assists. In fact, Marlonsson has scored or assisted on five of BU's eight goals this season. He is second in the SoCon in assists and averaging 0.50 per game.

The Bruins have proven to be tough to score on late in games. Of Belmont's 38 saves, 29 of them have come in the second half. BU's 29 saves are as many as two SoCon teams have notched all season long. Belmont is second in the conference in saves. Sophomore keeper Nicolo Dini (Settala, Italy) has been impressive in between the sticks, making 34 stops this season, the second most in the Southern Conference.

Belmont men's soccer competes in the Southern Conference for men's soccer while SIUE is an affiliate member of Mid-American Conference. Though the two clubs compete in different leagues in men's soccer, the two schools compete against each other in the Ohio Valley Conference for all other sports. The OVC does not sponsor men's soccer.
