NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Belmont University Men's Soccer forward Ares Marlonsson (Denver, Colo.) has been named the Southern Conference men's soccer player of the week the league announced Tuesday. The honor some after an impressive showing for the freshmen in the Bruins' opening match of SoCon play Saturday at UNC Greensboro.
In BU's game against the Spartans, Marlonsson scored two goals, propelling the Bruins to a 2-2 draw in the conference opener. His first goal came in the 52ndminute after taking a pass from sophomore Nigel Leo (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) that Marlonsson sent past the UNCG keeper. Needing another goal to stay in the game, Marlonsson struck again in the 81stminute after making a beautiful one-touch finish off a sophomore Matteo Bennati (Genova, Italy) cross.
Marlonsson's Saturday night brace marked the first for Belmont men's soccer since October 6, 2015 when Rashad Hyacenth netted two against Georgia State.
Proving to be one of the biggest offensive threats for Belmont this season, Marlonsson leads the squad in goals (3), assists (4) and points (10).
Marlonsson is the first ever Bruin to receive Southern Conference Player of the Week honors.
