NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Belmont University men's soccer rounds out the regular season Saturday afternoon with a matchup against conference foe Virginia Military Institute. Kickoff at Rose Park is slated for 2:00 p.m. CT.
Belmont and VMI have played each other three times in their history. A win, a loss and a tie (1-1-1) tell the story of this matchup. The last time the teams met was in 2011 at the Mafiaoza's Invitational hosted at Belmont University. The Bruins took that matchup 2-1.
GET TO KNOW THE KEYDETS
VMI has a 1-14-1 record on the year. Their win in October marked the first victory for the club in over three years. The Keydets are led offensively by Justin Riescher. In his 13 appearances, he has scored four goals, half of VMI's eight goals. On the defensive end, Broden Schull has been tested between the pipes, making a league-high 114 saves.
Belmont assistant coach Mark Carr is very familiar with the VMI program. Carr graduated from VMI in 2003 with a degree in history and was a member of the Keydete's men's soccer program where he was a four-year letterwinner. During his time on the VMI squad, he earned Southern Conference All-Academic honors and served as team captain.
Saturday afternoon's match will determine where the SoCon first round match will be played on Wednesday. The SoCon tournament has a new format this season, in which the No. 6 and No. 7 seeds play a first round match hosted by the higher seed. Belmont and VMI are locked into those spots, but the winner of Saturday's match will determine the host. In the event of a tie, Belmont would have two points to VMI's one, so the Bruins would host.
Saturday's match marks the final regular-season home match for the Bruins and the final one for Belmont's five seniors. Seniors Tony Doellefeld (St. Louis, Mo.), Adam Voloder (New South Wales, Australia), George Bukenya (Rougemont, N.C.), Nate Kennedy (Shelby, N.C.) and Matt Vuylsteke (Hamilton, Ont., Canada) will be honored in a pregame ceremony.
Live stats and a digital stream will be available on Saturday. As always, fans can follow @BelmontMSoccer on twitter for live updates.
