Sweet Victory

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Belmont University men's soccer defeated SoCon foe Virginia Military Institute 3-0 on senior day at E.S. Rose Park. The matchup rounded out regular season play for the Bruins and marked the side's first ever SoCon victory.

From the first whistle, Belmont was the offensive aggressor and maintained a majority of the possession. BU threatened early on, getting its first shot off in the 2ndminute of the match. The Bruins continued to pepper shots towards the goal in the first minutes of the first half, putting the first shot on target in the 10thminute, forcing an impressive VMI save to keep Belmont off the board.

After coming close several times, Belmont got on the board in the 13thminute. After earning a corner, the Bruins put a nice ball in the box that forced the VMI keeper to come off his line to challenge for the ball. The keeper attempted to punch the ball away but didn't get a good touch and freshman Daniel Twizer (Haifa, Israel) took advantage of the open net and drilled a shot in the back of the net to put the Bruins up 1-0.

BU found the back of the net again in the 28thminute. Freshman Ares Marlonsson (Denver, Colo.) played a nice pass to sophomore Matteo Bennati (Genova, Italy) who outran the Keydets' defender and found himself one-on-one with the keeper. Bennati took advantage of the situation put the Bruins up 2-0.

At the break, Belmont had outshot the Keydets 12-to-2, landing four of them on frame. The Bruins' defense wasn't tested much in the first half, but when it was it delivered. BU held the Keydets to just two shots with neither landing on frame.

Coming out of the halftime break, VMI started to put more pressure on the Belmont defense. In the 53rdminute, sophomore Nicolo Dini (Settala, Italy) faced his first shot on target and came up with a save.

With VMI itching to cut the deficit in half, BU struck again. In the 68thminute, senior Adam Voloder (New South Wales, Australia) scored his fourth goal of the season in his final regular season match in a Belmont uniform. Twizer set up the play when he played a long pass to freshman Niccolo Dagnoni (Milan, Italy) who was at the back post. Dagnoni played a smart pass to Voloder who was waiting at the back post and coolly put the ball in the back of the net.

Belmont continued to push on the offensive end, continually testing the VMI defense and creating several chances in the waning minutes of the match. The Bruins defeat VMI 3-0, securing home field advantage for the first round of the SoCon Tournament.
