NASHVILLE, Tenn. – #6 Belmont University men's soccer will host #7 Virginia Military Institute for its first post-season game since 2008 on Wednesday, October 31st. Kickoff for the Southern Conference First Round matchup is slated for 4:00 p.m. CT.
Belmont and VMI have played each other four times in their history with Belmont leading the all-time series 2-1-1. The teams met last just days ago in the SoCon regular season finale. Belmont defeated the Keydets 3-0 to secure home-field advantage for Wednesday night's post-season match.
Belmont faced VMI in its last match of the regular season. The Bruins dominated that matchup, outshooting the Keydets 16-7. During the first half, Belmont dominated possession and scored two early goals, one by freshman Daniel Twizer (Haifa, Israel) and one by sophomore Matteo Bennati (Genova, Italy). In the second half, Belmont continued to be the aggressor, but VMI was able to better contain the BU offense. Senior Adam Voloder (New South Wales, Australia) scored the third and final goal of the game in the second half, securing the 3-0 victory. Sophomore Nicolo Dini's (Settala, Italy) two saves were enough to earn Belmont's second shutout of the season.
Belmont men's soccer will make its first post-season appearance in a decade on Wednesday. The last time the Bruins made a post-season appearance was in 2008 when it earned an Atlantic Sun Tournament berth. In the first round of that tournament, BU defeated Stetson 4-3 in double overtime before falling at Campbell in the second round. A win on Wednesday would mark just the second ever post-season win in Belmont Men's Soccer history.
THE BENNATI TOUCH
Bennati has been equally as important to the Belmont offense this season as he was in his freshman campaign. Bennati leads the team again this season with five goals and has added three assists for a team-leading 13 points. Adding to his already impressive stat line, he has landed half of his 24 shots this season on frame.
