NASHVILLE, Tenn. - - Belmont University Director of Athletics Scott Corley announced Thursday the hiring of David Costa as the fifth head men's soccer coach in program history.

"I am excited to welcome David and his family into the Bruin family," Corley said. "David brings a background of winning throughout his distinguished career, all while coaching at institutions with similar academic and athletic profiles to Belmont. Yet, what stood out most in visiting with David - and talking with others in the industry - was that he is a man of high character and a strong leader of men. David is clearly ready to become a head coach at the NCAA Division I level, and I look forward to supporting him in building a successful men's soccer program at Belmont."

Costa comes to Belmont after spending the past two seasons as associate head coach at Xavier University. In that short time, the Musketeers earned results against eight nationally-ranked opponents and reached the Big East Championship match.

The North Carolina native spent the previous six seasons as the top assistant at NC State. Costa helped the Wolfpack earn results over the likes Wake Forest, Louisville, Virginia, Notre Dame, North Carolina, Duke, Virginia Tech and Boston College, among others.

His career took off as part of another Big East Conference stronghold, Butler. During his five campaigns with the Bulldogs, the program ascended to a No. 5 national ranking and a program-record 18 vicories in 2010.

"I am honored to become the Head Coach at Belmont University," Costa said. "I would like to thank my wife, Meghan, for her support, as well Dr. Fisher, Scott Corley, and the search committee for the opportunity to lead the men's soccer program. There are so many great people at Belmont. Throughout this process it was clear that there is a strong commitment from the University to partner with coaches and invest in the lives of student-athletes. It is our collective ambition to provide them an experience that will last long beyond their college years. I look forward to getting started with the staff and team."

Costa has coached three players currently on Major League Soccer rosters: 2016 MLS Defender of the Year Matt Hedges (FC Dallas), Nazmi Albadawi (FC Cincinnati) and Conor Donovan (Houston Dynamo).

Beyond his extensive collegiate experience, Costa has served in several prominent roles with youth soccer programs, including time as the head coach for Carmel (IN) United.

Costa was named 2008 and 2010 U.S. Soccer Development Academy Central Conference Coach of the Year and the 2008 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Midwest Regional Coach of the Year.

In addition, Costa was a four-year letterwinner at UNC Charlotte, helping the 49er program to the 2003 Conference USA championship match. Costa also received the David Schlee Memorial Award, given for determination and desire to succeed as a member of the Charlotte men's soccer program.

Costa holds a United States Soccer Federation 'A' License and has completed evaluations for the US Youth National Teams and United States Soccer Federation (USSF) Development Academy clubs.

He earned bachelor of arts degrees in psychology and history in 2004, and a master's degree in liberal studies in 2005.

Costa and his wife, Meghan, have two sons, Nicholas and Benjamin.
