Indianapolis, IN — The Belmont Bruins lost their first match of the Indiana road trip to IUPUI 4-3 on Saturday. This puts Belmont at 0-2 on the season.
After gaining the doubles point, the Bruins fell short as they lost four out of two singles matches.
With that being said, there were quite a few positive moments in this match for Belmont.
With each team winning once in doubles, Marko Ilic and Hendrik Inno had to fight tooth and nail in order to defeat Bradley Luetschwager and Kyle Whittaker at the 1 position. The two duos went back and forth for a good while before Inno and Ilic pulled away to win the doubles point for Belmont.
Hendrik Inno had even more success with singles play at the 3 position. After winning his first set 6-3, Inno was able to close the second set with a shutout against Eric Hollingsworth. This is his second singles win on the season.
Marko Ilic had a tough couple of sets but was able to continue his winning ways for the day as he defeated Sean Bailey 7-5, 6-4 at the 2 position. This is his first singles win for the season.
However, the damage had already been done before Ilic's match was over as IUPUI defeated Belmont in four straight singles finishes after Inno's match in order to win the overall match against the Bruins.
First at the 4 position, Jake Briggs lost two sets against Bradley Luetschwager 6-3, 6-4.
Then at the 6 position Grant Kelly lost against Michael Koch. Kelly lost the first set 6-4 and then was shutout on the second set.
Vincent Sterkens then lost two sets to Jac Newis. He lost his first set 6-3 and then lost a tough second set 7-5.
To close out, freshman David Faulkner gave Ethan Mardanus-Budio a tough couple of sets, but Mardanus-Budio was able to win 7-5, 6-4 against Faulkner in order to seal the deal for IUPUI.
Belmont's next match will be against Ball State at 12:00 PM on January 21 in Muncie, Indiana.
