KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - - In day 4 of the ITA Ohio Valley Regional, Hendrik Inno and Marko Ilic competed in the doubles semifinals against Aviv Ben Shabat and Mason Dragos of Butler, and were able to win to move on to the final round.
After their big upset in which they defeated the No. 4 ranked doubles pair of the country, Cameron Klinger and Billy Rowe of Vanderbilt, the Euro Duo of Belmont maintained momentum to grab the win in the semifinals.
In a first to two sets match, Inno/Ilic got off to a strong start in the match as they won a nail bitting first set 7-5 but then found themselves heading into a tiebreaker set as they lost the second set 3-6. However in the tiebreaker, the Euro Duo was able to pull away and end the match with a 10-6 win.
Inno and Ilic were able to do something that was at one point deemed impossible in Belmont tennis. Their upset against Klinger/Rowe in the quarter finals was the first time in Belmont men's tennis history in which Belmont beat an opponent in either singles or doubles that was ranked in the top 10 nationally. Now they will be asked pull off another major upset, as they will be facing the No. 31 nationally ranked pair in Timo Stodder and Preston Touliatos of the host school, Tennessee.
No matter what happens in tomorrows finals match, Belmont has had a terrific tournament thus far. Hendrik Inno making it to the round of 16 in the singles draw was the furthest a Belmont player made it in the ITA Ohio Valley Regional, and making it all the way to the finals is certainly the furthest a Belmont doubles pair has made it in this tournament.
But now, Belmont has an opportunity to win the doubles tournament for the first time in school history, and their historic match against Stodder/Touliatos begins tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. ET.
