SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Junior Hendrik Inno and sophomore Marko Ilic will be representing Belmont in the doubles tournament of the ITA National Fall Championships, which begins tomorrow, November 7 and ends on Sunday, November 11.
This will be the very first appearance at the ITA National Fall Championships in Belmont history, and it comes after an absolutely stellar performance in the ITA Ohio Valley Regional, in which they upset the No. 4 ranked doubles pair in the country (the first time in history anyone from Belmont had beaten either a singles or doubles opponent ranked in the top ten nationally) and the No. 31 ranked doubles pair in the country to win the tournament.
With this tournament and the ITA Masters that Hendrik Inno competed in earlier in September, the Bruins are getting great exposure competing in prestigious tournaments such as these.
"We are very excited to be playing in the tournament," said head coach Mauricio Antun. "We thought Hendrik had done an amazing job to hae made it to Malibu back in September, but this is even more special. We are just glad to be able to play among the very best in the nation and ready to compete and represent Belmont on the big stage."
"I think we've just focused on the journey and haven't really realized how big of a scale it is to go to the fall nationals," said Inno. "I think it's really big for our program as well as Belmont in general to represent Belmont there."
This is a huge stage for Belmont tennis since it is the first time that anyone from the men's and women's tennis program at Belmont has ever made it to this tournament, but as Hendrik Inno says, he and Ilic will be focusing on playing their own game despite playing on as huge a stage as this:
"The goal is going to be the same, to play every match, to play every point, and to focus on every point. We know that the level is there, so we just have to play our game."
The Euro Duo will have their work cut out for them in the first round of 32, as they will be facing off against August Holmgren and Joel Gamerov of the University of San Diego. Holmgren/Gamerov won the ITA Southwest Regional and are currently ranked as the No. 7 doubles pair in the tournament and No. 34 in the country. This will be a true test for the Bruins, as they will try to keep their uspet streak alive.
