NASHVILLE, Tenn. - - The Belmont Bruins swept in their doubleheader home opener today, as they defeated Southern Utah 4-0 and Martin Methodist 4-1.
After suffering a defeat to Memphis earlier in the season, the Bruins were able to join the win column with these two victories today. The current regular season record is 2-1.
Belmont vs. Southern Utah
Belmont kicked the match off in style by grabbing the doubles point after struggling in this area the match before. Hendrik Inno / Marko Ilic won the 1-set match on a tiebreaker against Jake Williams / Remus Cope of the Thunderbirds, while Jake Briggs / Joan Valy defeated Jonathan Morales / Conor Tordoff.
From there, the singles matches were all extremely close, yet Belmont's Hendrik Inno, Vincent Sterkens, and Joan Valy all grabbed their first singles victories on the season to end the match at 4-0 for the Bruins.
Junior Hendrik Inno had a challenging first set but was able to prevail against freshman Keonho Shin by grabbing the first set with a score of 7 games to 5. From there, the native of Someru, Estonia rolled on with a 6-3 victory in the second set.
Senior Joan Valy grabbed the first set 6-3, but then gave up the second set to sophomore Agustin Tamagnone 6-1. The third set went back and forth until Valy pulled away to end the third set at 7-5.
Junior Vincent Sterkens had a very similar story to Joan Valy's. Sterkens lost the first set 6-1 against junior Juan Erro, but then grabbed the second set 6-3. Sterkens then found himself winning the final set 7-5, concluding the match with a win for the Bruins.
Belmont vs. Martin Methodist
Belmont dominated in doubles play to start the second match of the day with a point. Both Hendrik Inno / Marko Ilic and Grant Kelly / Dawson Blankinship defeated their doubles opponents without giving up a single game while Jake Briggs / Joan Valy gave up just one game in their victory.
Hendrik Inno went right back to work, as he had himself a stellar performance against junior Eduardo Costa. He won the match by a score of 6-2, 6-1.
Senior Zak Khan ended up forfeiting his match after suffering an on-court illness during the duration of the first set. There is no official timetable on when he will make his return, but it is very likely that Khan will be back for the next match on Friday.
The Bruins will travel on the road for their next match, as they travel to Dayton, Ohio to face the Dayton Flyers on Friday, January 25, at 6:00 P.M.
