ORLANDO, Fla. – Belmont's tennis duo of junior Hendrik Inno and sophomore Marko Ilic made history Tuesday night as they won their first round match at the NCAA Doubles Championship held at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida.
The duo defeated Florida's McClain Kessler and Duarte Vale in straight sets 7-6, 7-6. In the first set, both duos stayed on serve until the tiebreaker, when Inno and Ilic took control and captured the first set.
Kessler and Vale stormed out in the second set, taking an early 5-2 lead, but the Bruins fought back and sent the match to another tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, the Gator duo took an early lead, but the Bruins never gave up and eventually won the breaker 7-5 to clinch the first round win for Belmont.
With the win, Inno and Ilic to advance to the Round of 16 where they will face #2 seed, Maxime Cressy and Keegan Smith of UCLA. Cressy and Smith, recently named Pac-12 Doubles Team of the Year, beat Aziz Kijametovic and Francois Musitell of Old Dominion in straight sets on Tuesday night.
