NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont men's track and field team opened this weekend's competition with strong performances by its athletes amongst steep competition.

The Bruins competed at the Joe Walker Invitational at Ole Miss in University, Miss. on Friday.

Belmont was led by another impressive performance by sophomore Braden Carei (Uniontown, Pa.) in the pole vault with a mark of 4.65 meters.

Junior Nathan Nammour (Tampa, Fla.) broke the  Belmont school record in the 200 meter dash just last week at the Yellow Jacket Invitational. Nammour overcame a trip out of the starting blocks to beat his own mark to set yet another school and personal best in the with a time of 21.69. Teammate freshman Ryan Teague (Double Oak, Texas) finished right behind Nammour, also breaking the school record with a time of 21.74.

The Bruins throws squad put up strong performances throughout the indoor season, and the story is no different thus far this outdoor season.

In the Javelin, junior Stuart Landis (Victor, Mont.) and junior Matt Walker (Southlake, Texas) both made the finals.

Senior Del McSpadden (Brentwood, Tenn.) once again led the hammer throw squad with an impressive mark of 58.66 meters which was good enough to make the finals. Senior Sean Magnuson (Mokena, Ill.) and sophomore Stephen Gibson (Tuscola, Ill.) also made the finals in the event.

The Bruins will be back on the track tomorrow in University, Miss. Action begins at 9 a.m. with the remaining decathlon events.

"We saw big marks out of Del, Sean, and Stephen in the hammer, but the highlight of the day was Nate and Ryan in the 200.  Nate tripped out of the blocks and still ran a big PR and school record, while Ryan ran just .05s slower which is a big PR for him as well.  These two are leading the sprint crew into what I think will be a breakthrough season for us.  Tomorrow may be ugly with the storms rolling in, but our guys are ready to go regardless," said Associate Head Coach Cameron Harvey.
