Grabbing The Gold

OXFORD, Ala. – The Belmont University men's track and field team competed in the first day of competition at the OVC Championship on Thursday.

Eight Belmont athletes competed on the opening night of competition in Oxford.

Senior Del McSpadden (Brentwood, Tenn.) secured the first medal of the competition for the Bruins with a personal record mark of 59.48 meters in the hammer throw.  Sophomore Stephen Gibson (Tuscola, Ill.) also competed in the event finishing in seventh place with a mark of 51.38 meters.

On the track, sophomore Chase Ballard (Colombus, Ind.) competed in the 10000 meter run, crossing the finish line in seventh place with a time of 32:04.82.

Juniors Ryan Lipe (Franklin, Tenn.) and Stuart Landis (Victor, Mont.) are in good positions after competing in the first half of the Decathlon.  Lipe currently sits in the third place spot with 3278 points and Landis is right behind in the fourth place spot with 3004 points with the remainder of the competition to be held tomorrow.

"Del had the best throw of his life today, and it was so cool to see that happen at a championship meet.  He is such a big part of our program, and I'm so proud of him and what he has accomplished.  We had three hammer throwers make it to the finals, and it just goes to show what we can do when we go into these competitions with an offensive mindset, ready to put some pressure on the other teams," Said Assistant Coach Joe Frye.

Action will continue on Friday starting at 8 a.m. with the multi-events.
