NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- For Belmont University distance runners, competition is practically a year-round experience. In the calm before the NCAA South Regional cross country meet next week, the Bruins finalized their indoor and outdoor track and field schedules for the upcoming 2017-18 season.

Belmont's throwers, sprinters and jumpers will join the distance crew Dec. 2 for the start of track season at the Vanderbilt Indoor Opener. The small meet hosted here in Nashville by the SEC Commodores is the Bruins' only date on this side of the New Year.

"That first meet will be a nice assessment of our fall training," Belmont Associate Head Track and Field Coach Cameron Harvey said. "That's almost like a preseason meet for us to see what we have and get our freshmen involved."

The Belmont teams will reconvene in January to complete the remainder of the five-date indoor slate. It all leads up to the two-day Ohio Valley Conference Indoor Championships hosted by Eastern Illinois on Feb. 23-24 at Charleston, Ill. The NCAA Indoor Nationals are two weeks later in College Station, Texas.

Belmont's outdoor schedule features six dates, including several split-squad lineups, with a seventh to be determined ahead of the OVC Outdoor Championships that are slated for May 10-12.

Among those split-squad dates are a pair of prominent relay-specific meets to which Belmont will send only its top athletes. The Texas Relays in Austin, Texas, begin March 28 while the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., start April 12.

"It's good to get into those type of meets for our elite athletes," Harvey explained. "We want to give them a chance to shine against the best competition."

The idea is those trials will pay off come conference time. Following the OVC Outdoor Championships, this year hosted by Tennessee Tech in nearby Cookeville, qualifying athletes will compete at the NCAA East Preliminary starting May 24 in Tampa, Fla. NCAA Outdoor Nationals follow two weeks later in Eugene, Ore.

But before any of that the Belmont cross country runners look to conclude their successful fall seasons Friday, Nov. 10, at the NCAA South Regional in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
