Commodore Invitational: Day 1

Commodore Invitational: Day 1

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Belmont University's weight throwers put up a strong showing Friday evening during the first day of Vanderbilt's Commodore Invitational indoor track and field meet.

With only a handful of events contested ahead of Day 2's full slate back at the Vanderbilt Multipurpose Facility, the Bruins walked away with two bronzes and a pair of personal records in the weight toss.

Junior Stephen Gibson (Tuscola, Ill.) and senior Alyssa Andersen (Oswego, Ill.) each finished third in the competition. Gibson's throw of 15.91 meters (52 feet, 2.5 inches) trailed only one college-aged competitor in the men's event while Andersen's throw covered 15.73m (51-7.25). Belmont throws coach Joe Frye, competing unattached, had the top men's throw of the day at 19.95m (65-5.5).

Behind Gibson, junior Corey Claiborne (Alpharetta, Ga.) was fifth at 14.78m (48-6) while freshmen Cal Widener (Elmhurst, Ill.) and Ryan Sheldon (Anchorage, Alaska) also had top-10 finishes with PR throws. Widener took seventh at 14.44m (47-4.5) with Sheldon tenth at 12.14m (39-10).

The Bruins will be back at it at the Commodore Invitational beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
