Samford Invite track meet preview

Samford Invite track meet preview

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Wintry conditions in the area have forced the Belmont University track and field program to get creative with its training and practice schedule. The Samford Invitational indoor track meet this week gives the Bruins not only a chance to face strong competition, but to return to a sense of normalcy.

With multiple days of classes and activities recently canceled due to snow, the Bruins now return to the indoor track at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Alabama. Multi events begin Thursday with the bulk of competition scheduled for Friday and Saturday.

"We've had to revert to more strength runs off the track, so getting on the track again this weekend will be something we definitely want to take advantage of," Belmont Assistant Track Coach Kate Bucknam said. "Samford will be another great opportunity to better our times and for our younger athletes to get more experience racing at another competitive meet."

Outside of a few top performers – junior Kaleb McLeod earned Ohio Valley Conference Male Track Athelte of the Week honors for his work in the 3,000 meters – Belmont is coming off of a somewhat underwhelming performance at the Commodore Classic. The Nasvhille meet was the Bruins' first following a lengthy holiday hibernation. It was also the last time the squad has had optimal conditions to compete with no indoor track facility to call its own for daily workouts.

So the goals are simple this time out: improve on last week's base layer, find consistency and confidence in Alabama and stay healthy.

"I'm looking forward to this weekend as the first travel meet for our freshmen," Frye said. "It's always good for the younger side of our team to get some indoor travel experience with competition before we head to the outdoor season."
