Two top performers

Two top performers

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- A pair of Belmont University track and field athletes claimed top finishes among college competitors at two different meets Friday evening.

Junior Kaleb McLeod (Soperton, Ga.) followed up his recent Ohio Valley Conference Track Athlete of the Week award by setting a personal record in the 5,000 meters and winning the event at the Vanderbilt Invitational. The bulk of the Bruins squad was in Alabama though at the Samford Invitational, where junior Stephen Gibson (Tuscola, Ill.) finished second overall in the weight throw.

Gibson's heave of 17.18 meters (56-4.5) was runner-up to only his coach, Joe Frye (20.56m), who was entered as a member of the Music City Mavericks Track Club.

McLeod ran a speedy 14:23.52 to best the field by close to 10 seconds. It's his fastest indoor 5,000 by 20 seconds and his fastest overall by more than 9 seconds. He and senior Bruins Luke Evans (eighth) and Kaden Eaton (10th) were the only Belmont representatives who stayed behind for the Nashville-based meet.

The remainder were at the Birmingham CrossPlex for the two-day Samford-hosted meet. The majority of the competition there takes place Saturday.

"They looked much better than last weekend, even with a spotty week of practice due to the snow," Coach Frye said of his throwers' performances, which included a PR by junior Corey Claiborne in the weight (15.39m).

"I'm excited to see what our entire team is able to do tomorrow."

Top Belmont women's placers at Samford included Hannah Beth Moorhouse (Morristown, Tenn.), who tied for 10th in the high jump at 5-1, and freshman Payton Barlow (White House, Tenn.), who was 12th in the 200 meters at 26.04.

Action continues at the Samford Invitational beginning at 9 a.m.
