HUNTINGTON W.Va – Near or far, no record was safe from the Belmont University runners on Saturday.
Junior Nate Nammour (Tampa, Fla.) and senior Matt Edwards (Glamorgan, Wales) combined to break three school men's indoor track and field records on the second day of the Marshall Chipotle Invitational, powering the Bruins to a second-place finish with 110 team points.
Nammour blew past the school marks in both the 200 and 400 meters, while Edwards edged the Belmont record for the 3,000.
Nammour topped his own 400 record set a year ago at this same facility in 48.15 seconds to place first. He took third with a 22.17 in the 200, breaking a record that stood since Brandon Jarnigan ran a 22.21 in 2001. Nammour now owns the school marks in the 200 and 400 for both indoor and outdoor competition.
With Marshall the final regular-season indoor meet, Nammour credited a season's worth of preparation and focus for his smashing performance. And the push of Belmont Associate Head Track Coach Cameron Harvey.
"I knew I needed to deliver a solid performance today and Coach Cam prepared us really well over the past few weeks," Nammour said. "Trusting in his training regime gave me a huge confidence boost going into this weekend."
Edwards set a blistering pace in the 3,000 and finished second in 8:19.39, bypassing Marcus Bridger-Wilkinson's Belmont-best time by 2.5 seconds from 2014. It's a mark Edwards has had his eye on since an unfortunately timed appendectomy derailed the end of his cross country season this past fall.
"That's motivated me to get back after it since missing the business end of cross country season," Edwards said. "I knew me or Kaleb (McLeod) were going to get the record if we got in the right race."
The junior McLeod (Soperton, Ga.) was a near fifth in the race.
Junior Corey Claiborne (Alpharetta, Ga.), freshman Cal Widener (Elmhurst, Ill.) and junior Stephen Gibson (Tuscola, Ill.) finished 2-3-4 in the shot put with Gibson setting a personal record of 15.47 meters (50-9.25), one of 10 PRs on the day.
Sophomore Drake Mitchell (Nashville, Tenn.), sophomore Alex Miller (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and junior Ryan Lipe (Franklin, Tenn.) also went 2-3-4 in the 60-meter hurdles. Mitchell, who was fourth in the high jump, finished in 8.61 to PR as well.
Sophomore Seth Randall had a big day as well, setting a pair of PRs in the 60 (7.10) and 200 (22.87).
The Belmont coaching staff looked at the Marshall meet as the final tune-up for the Ohio Valley Conference Indoor Championships, the next meet on the calendar. The Bruins head to Charleston, Ill., for conference on Feb. 23-24 feeling good about their progress so far this season.
"We wanted to see mental focus, execution of race plans and good team support, and the staff was pretty happy with how the team responded this weekend," Associate Head Track and Field Coach Cameron Harvey said. "Hopefully we can keep this momentum going for the next two weeks before we head to the indoor championships."
