Spring awakening

ATLANTA, Ga. – Belmont University's throwers made a great spring debut in the first outdoor track and field meet of the season Friday at the Yellow Jacket Invitational.

Junior Stephen Gibson (Tuscola, Ill.) and freshman Jessica Mattsson (Tierp, Sweden) were Belmont's top placers in the hammer throw, Gibson setting a personal record with his toss.

Gibson placed fifth in the men's competition with a toss of 52.38 meters (171-10) to surpass his previous high by more than a foot. Mattsson, competing in her first meet with the Bruins since enrolling at the semester, finished fourth in the women's field with a throw of 52.22 meters (171-4).
