NASHVILLE, Tenn. – For the strongest body on the Belmont University track and field team, the mental side made all the difference for Corey Claiborne at Friday's Vanderbilt Black & Gold Invitational.
Claiborne (Alpharetta, Ga.) visualized a big throw and unleashed a shot put record-breaker in the meet's opening event. He covered 16.42 meters (53-10.5), surpassing his own Belmont outdoor record by two inches to finish second. Claiborne followed that up with a sixth-place finish in the hammer throw at 51.46 meters (168-10.25), nearly four meters beyond his previous best.
"I just got more dynamic in my throws, changed my mentality after the shot put to just go get it," Claiborne said. "For hammer, it was to go big or go home because I didn't feel satisfied with my shot put performance."
Claiborne's overall PR in the shot put is 17.12 meters (56-2.25), set this past indoor season.
"Corey had a great day in shot and in hammer," said Belmont Assistant Track Coach Joe Frye, who leads the throwers. "He's starting to move past a bit of a sticking point to that next level and with a little more time he'll get there. He's putting in a ton of work and I'm excited to see it pay off."

Junior teammate Stephen Gibson (Tuscola, Ill.) out-threw Claiborne by less than an inch at 51.48 meters (168-11) in the hammer to finish fifth, best among Bruins. Freshman Cal Widener (Elmhurst, Ill.) was third in the shot with a throw of 15.62 meters (51-3).
Senior Matthew Blivin (Durham, N.C.) was the top Belmont finisher on the track Friday, placing 13th in the 1,500 meters. His 3:56.92 was just ahead of fellow senior Kaden Eaton (Columbus, Ind.), who was 15th in 3:57.06. Sophomore Christian Gonzales (Orinda, Calif.) shaved three seconds off his personal best to take 22nd in 4:01.81 in the event.
Day 2 of the Black & Gold Invitational resumes at 10 a.m. at Vanderbilt on Saturday.
