AUSTIN, Texas – It won't be offiical for more than another month, but Belmont University's Caleb Corprew posted a 400-meter hurdle time Thursday that could earn him a spot in May's NCAA East Preliminary outdoor track and field meet.
Corprew (Midwest City, Okla.) ran a 52.43 in the long hurdles at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, a time more than a second quicker than any other in the Ohio Valley Conference headed into this week's meets. Corprew, the reigning OVC Male Track Athlete of the Week, earned a 27th-place finish in an extremely deep and talented Texas Relays field.
"He had a much cleaner race and combined that with an aggressive first half of his race to run a time that is most likely a regional mark or close to it," said Belmont Associate Head Track Coach Cameron Harvey. "But there's still time to drop once we can get him stronger on the finish."
The top 48 times in the East Region advance to the NCAA East Preliminary, which is held May 24-26 in Tampa, Fla. Corprew's 52.43, which is just off of his own Belmont record, would rank 10th if the season ended today. It doesn't and times will continue to get faster, but the mark puts Corprew in a comfortable position from which to build.

Fellow Belmont senior Christian Crenshaw (Memphis, Tenn.) also ran in the 400 hurdles, posting a 55.64 to take 68th. The two Bruins will combine with sophomore Ryan Teague (Double Oak, Texas) and junior Nate Nammour (Tampa, Fla.) in the 4x400-meter relay Friday.
"They say the track is fast and are exited to go for the relay tomorrow," Harvey added.
Junior Corey Claiborne (Alpharetta, Ga.), who will throw the shot put Friday at the Texas Relays, took fourth while competing at the nearby Texas State Bobcat Invitational in the discus Thursday. He threw 39.49 meters (129-6.75).
A handful of other Bruins are also competing at this week's Raleigh Relays. Action begins in North Carolina on Friday as well.
